Playing safe
Everyone can play a part in making the football environment a safe and rewarding place to be. ACC and New Zealand Football (NZF) have developed a health and safety checklist to help you identify and eliminate hazards. This will soon be part of the NZF Club Charter mark scheme (a Football Club Accreditation Programme) designed to reward and encourage well-run clubs of all sizes.

Eliminate hazards
Check the playing areaEnsure:
- Ground is level and free of holes
- Exposed sprinkler heads, broken glass, rubbish or stones are removed
- Excessively muddy and boggy areas are avoided
- No water spills on the floor (indoor football)
- All playing surfaces have adequate lighting
- Perimeter fencing and advertising boards are not too close to the playing area
- Spectators and vehicles are well away from the playing area, which is roped off.
Check playing equipment
Ensure:
- Equipment is regularly maintained
- Nets are securely attached
- Goal posts are fixed and in good condition with smooth surfaces
- Corner flags will flex on impact with no sharp edges
- Equipment is suited to size and ability of players.
In cold weather conditions
Ensure players:
- Wear breathable undergarments and layers
- Keep outer layers on until the last moment and replace immediately afterwards
- Have water-proof and/or wind-proof clothing available at training and games.
In warm weather conditions
Ensure players:
- Wear light, breathable clothing and a cap
- Aren’t playing in the midday sun and get in the shade as soon as possible
- Wear sunscreen
- Hydrate well before the game or training session
- Drink during all breaks of play.
